Meet Lizzie Dudley

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK RIGHT NOW?

I am inspired by the colors in nature- both flora and fauna and I am torn between the mountains and water because I love to paint both.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PIECE IS FINISHED?

Is a piece ever finished? I just have to make myself put down the paintbrush sometimes.

IN ONLY A FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

My style is impressionist with high chroma. I love to play around with colors.

DID ANYTHING SHIFT OR SURPRISE YOU WHILE CREATING THIS COLLECTION?

How much I truly love plein air painting because you see the true colors when you are outside.

WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS (PAST OR PRESENT) WHO INFLUENCE OR INSPIRE YOU?

I love Sorolla and Monet, and current artists Kevin McPherson, Lori Putnam, Vicki Norman and Michelle Held.

WHAT MATERIALS OR TECHNIQUES DO YOU MOST ENJOY USING, AND WHY?

I am only happy painting in oils, but I also do oil and cold wax paintings that are more abstract that my straight oil works.

STUDIO SOUNDTRACK: SILENCE, MUSIC, OR PODCASTS?

I usually paint in silence – I get so into what I am doing that I think a podcast would distract me. Soft music would be fine but not necessary. Hours go by and I don’t even realize it.

COFFEE OR TEA WHILE YOU WORK?

Just water – when I am painting, I am painting.

WHAT’S ONE TOOL OR MATERIAL YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IN THE STUDIO?

One of my favorite tricks is to use a q-tips to wipe out areas that need to be light or to correct an error.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: “ART IS…”

what makes me happy. I love looking at art at galleries and I love creating art, especially if a subject moves me.
