Meet Hillary Einwick
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK RIGHT NOW?
Summer at the beach is a constant source of inspiration—everything from the vibrant hydrangeas in full bloom to the ever-changing colors of the marshes and sunsets fuels my creativity. Combined with my background in interior design, fabrics and textiles also influence my color palettes.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PIECE IS FINISHED?
Sometimes I just know and other times when it doesn't feel finished I'll let it sit for a couple of days/weeks and come back to it with fresh eyes.
IN ONLY A FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Colorful and impressionistic. I love painting with bold brushstrokes and simple shapes—just enough to hint at the subject, yet leaving space for the viewer to fill in the gaps with their own imagination.
DID ANYTHING SHIFT OR SURPRISE YOU WHILE CREATING THIS COLLECTION?
I love painting the reflections of the sun and clouds on water. I usually paint natural bodies of water so trying a pool was a first for me. I loved trying to capture the pool's water caustics.
WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS (PAST OR PRESENT) WHO INFLUENCE OR INSPIRE YOU?
Henri Matisse, I love all his works from his interiors and landscapes to his shape collages. I also love the bright colors of Andre Derain who founded Fauvism with Matisse. Their bold use of colors, simple forms and expressive brush strokes always inspires me.
WHAT MATERIALS OR TECHNIQUES DO YOU MOST ENJOY USING, AND WHY?
I recently started using oil sticks to add texture and details to my paintings at the end and I love the impact they have.
STUDIO SOUNDTRACK: SILENCE, MUSIC, OR PODCASTS?
Music! I tend to listen to music that fits the mood of my work. It's usually Taylor Swift mixed in with country
COFFEE OR TEA WHILE YOU WORK?
A chai latte is my treat for a long day in the studio.
WHAT’S ONE TOOL OR MATERIAL YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IN THE STUDIO?
Titanium white paint. I mix all of my own colors and go through so many tubes a week!
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: “ART IS…”
