Meet Julia

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK RIGHT NOW?

I am always inspired by the details in God's creation. For this reason, my palette is often guided by the colors of nature, and my subject matter is typically things like flowers, fruit on a vine, or landscapes. My background in interior design also shapes my understanding of space and color, and it plays a key role in my painting style.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PIECE IS FINISHED?

I would call myself an intuitive painter, meaning that I create my paintings by primarily relying on my feelings and instinct rather than a full pre-planned composition. This drives my process and color palette, but also helps guide me to a painting's stopping point.

IN ONLY A FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PAINTING STYLE?

Rich in texture and heavy brushstrokes; Impression-esque; Calming

WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS (PAST OR PRESENT) WHO INFLUENCE OR INSPIRE YOU?

Claude Monet (his masterful use of color vibrancy and brushstrokes); John Singer Sargent (his use of light and shadows); My grandmother (who taught me how to paint in oils at a young age and was an artist herself).

WHAT MATERIALS OR TECHNIQUES DO YOU MOST ENJOY USING, AND WHY?

I love painting with heavy brushstrokes. Not only do I find it fun to layer paint on top of paint and watch it take form, I also feel that the texture that comes from thick paint adds dimension to my pieces and invites the viewer to take a closer look and engage with my work.

STUDIO SOUNDTRACK: SILENCE, MUSIC, OR PODCASTS?

Worship music, almost always!

COFFEE OR TEA WHILE YOU WORK?

Coffee, coffee, coffee.

WHAT’S ONE TOOL OR MATERIAL YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IN THE STUDIO?

A palette knife.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: “ART IS…”
